Fèlsina remains a reference-point. The entry-level wines are terrific, while the flagships live up to their reputations. This year, I found the 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva especially fine given its combination of quality and price, but all the 2022s are notable. Like many estates, Fèlsina saw a harvest that extended into October, with fruit for Rancia picked from October 5 and 12.

Two-thousand twenty-three was another story. “I have worked vintages here since 1990 and have never seen a year with so much fog and humidity,” said proprietor Giovanni Poggiali. “Our production is down about 30%. At a certain point we realized some parcels were unlikely to give good results, so we left those and focused on our best blocks. At Rancia we had pretty typical yields of 43 hectoliters per hectare.”
