It has remained a puzzle to me why Austria's most famous sweet wine producer has remained relatively unknown in America. For this reason I am happy to take the opportunity to introduce a selection of his wines that have largely been bought up to now only by wine insiders in the States. The picturesque small city of Rust is situated directly on Lake Neusiedl, not on the flat east bank in the Seewinkel district but on the hilly west bank with vineyards facing south and southeast. High-quality dry white and red wines are produced here in addition to noble sweet wines. The most famous of the sweet wines from this side of the lake, and a specialty of the Feiler-Artinger family, are the "Ruster Ausbruche," which are traditionally vinified with judicious oxidation and are more similar to Tokaji Aszu than are Trockenbeerenauslesen from Seewinkel. In great botrytis vintages like 1999, 2000, and 2001 and 2002, a Ruster Ausbruch Essenz is also offered.
