The Feiler-Artinger estate, housed in a handsome Baroque mansion in the center of Rust, was founded in 1936 by Gustav and Caroline Feiler. Today, it is run by Kurt Feiler, who made his first vintage at home in 1994 after graduating from Klosterneuburg and working a stage at Cheval Blanc. He took over fully in 2013. The family farms 26.5 hectares of vines, all in Rust, apart from one site in Oggau. With 30% of plantings, Blaufränkisch is the most important variety, followed by Chardonnay, Zweigelt, Neuburger and Weissburgunder with much smaller lots of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Welschriesling, Cabernet Franc, Traminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muskateller, Muscat Ottonel, Hárslevelű, Pinot Gris and Syrah. The estate is known for its long-lived sweet wines. During my visit, I tasted a selection of current releases from 2018 to 2022, including an Eiswein picked in the early hours of 23 December 2021, the first ever made at the estate – since botrytis usually arrives before any ice wine can be made.
