The Edi Simčič winery is known for its bold style but also extremely high quality. The family works twelve hectares spread out across the small villages of Brda, with elevations ranging from 90 to up to 300 meters. Extremely low yields, all processes done by hand and a reliance on French barrique inform the character of their wines. While this may sound quite international in style, the wines are through and through Slovenian, communicating a pleasurable rusticity beneath their impeccable polish. The Duet Lex is a perfect example. It’s a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc that will require several years to soften fully, yet I still found it hard not to pour a second glass.
