There are fewer better estates in Italy than this one owned by Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo, which they now run with their children Antonio and Josè. This is not just because Donnafugata produces more than two million bottles a year of high-quality wines, including some limited-volume special bottlings, but also because of their willingness to perform research and to innovate. In this regard, the marvelous work done on the island of Pantelleria, where the Rallo family has invested huge sums of money to make the best possible Zibibbo wines, both dry and sweet, is something all wine lovers ought to be grateful for. All that hard work has paid off by allowing us to understand the island’s terroir far better than ever before. It has also created work and opportunities for the island’s inhabitants, as well as one of Italy’s ten best sweet wines, the Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé.
