The Brunier family, who are best known as the owners of Vieux Télégraphe and are also co-owners with their long-time U.S. importer Kermit Lynch of Les Pallières in Gigondas, bought this venerable estate in 1986 with the intent to maintain its wine's distinctive identity, said Daniel Brunier in February. La Roquète's Châteauneufs are strongly marked by the sand-rich soils of the Piedlong site, near Rayas and Pignan; they show more elegance and early approachability than the structured Vieux Télégraphe wines that emanate from the La Crau vineyard, and Brunier wants to keep it that way. "Keeping the two properties and their wines apart makes us think more broadly about Châteauneuf," he told me, "and making wines of two distinct personalities helps to express the different faces of the appellation--power as well as elegance."
