Gaunoux picked early in 2013, beginning on September 23 with grape sugars in the range of 12%, and chaptalizing to about 13%."We had small, pulpy grapes," he told me."And thanks to a lot of millerandage the fruit was clean--even our pinot noir."He reported that vineyards hit by hail on the north side of Meursault had more juice in their grapes and produced more wine, while he was more likely to have small, dry grapes from the southern part of the appellation. The wines changed fairly dramatically during the malolactic fermentations, he went on, noting that at the outset he had even thought about de-acidifying some cuvees."The 2013s are not bad, but we need to wait a bit," he said."Two thousand ten is the real vintage for extended cellaring; put it aside and drink the 2011s now."He compared the 2013s to the 2010s, noting that 2012 was a more sunny, ripe vintage. The '13s will be racked into tanks after the '14 harvest, then bottled in December.
