The Jaume family’s 52-hectare domaine was established in 1826. For years Domaine Grand Veneur has been a highly reliable producer of modern-style, fruit driven, sometimes oaky Châteauneufs that show well on the young side. In recent vintages, however, I have noticed a greater degree of restraint and structure to the wines, as well as less oak influence. The 2017s and 2018s emphatically show the forward, user-friendly character of those years, while the 2019s are built along a more classic line and should enjoy relatively long aging curves. The oak component is always present in these wines when they are released, so patience is a necessity if that character isn’t your thing.
