The 20th century went out with a bang for red Burgundy lovers, with the 1999 vintage producing copious quantities of excellent to outstanding wine.
From the outset, the 1999 red Burgundies offered a rare combination of charm and power. Most of the better wines were balanced and alluring from the start, but they are evolving very slowly and still have plenty of life ahead of them. While many of the ‘99s I sampled with the producers this winter have gone through sullen stages in bottle, most of them have launched into their periods of peak drinkability. If you own these wines – and especially if you chose wisely at the outset – you will be amply rewarded.

Cellarmaster Philippe Brun describes the domain 2000s as aromatic, supple wines, to drink early - a very good restaurant vintage. The fragile fruit, picked largely under very warm conditions, generally needed some acidification. In comparison, he noted, the 2001 harvest brought thicker skins, higher acidity and more concentration. Brun and Bruno Clair both consider 1999 to be their best vintage since 1990. This is always a tricky cellar for barrel tasting, as the wines tend to show a firm tannic side early on and there relatively little sweetening influence of new oak. That said, I found a few of the lesser wines a bit wimpy and dilute, and lacking in flavor authority ("it was a very big harvest in Marsannay," Clair admits), but at the level of the estate's top crus these are scented, pure wines of subtlety and class. The '99s had been racked for the first time about two weeks prior to my visit. (Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL)
