Alberic Mazoyer, long at Chapoutier, is now a partner in this historic estate as Voge eases further into retirement-but not so en retrait that he could not insist that I taste each of the recently bottled 2004 Saint-Perays, which are all 100% marsanne. The wines here are typically classic in expression and structure, 2003 and 2004 proving no exception.

Voge told me that the stems in 2003 were not completely ripe and would have produced a more rustic style of wine, so he eliminated them. But the fruit came in with sugars in the very high 14% range. Voge considers 2003 to be even more powerful than 1990, a vintage he says is great today. Still, he noted that he'd rather drink the new vintage in its first 8 to 12 years for its fruit, before it reaches the gibier stage. (New Castle Imports, Myrtle Beach, SC) Also tasted: 2002 Cornas*.
