I was deeply struck by the wines I tasted during a recent visit to Diamond Creek. These are the first wines made by new winemaker Graham Wehmeier, leaving aside the 2020s, which were not bottled. The 2021s are particularly impressive, as they point to a style that emphasizes more freshness and finesse than in the recent past. Wehmeier has also reduced the oak imprint, which is another positive. Lastly, the estate’s considerable problems with Brett in the cellar during the last period of the Brounstein family’s ownership also appear to have been addressed. In addition to these wines, Diamond Creek bottled the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow (which I did not taste), but in a very small volume, as the vineyard is presently being redeveloped.
