The DeLille Cellars wines, made by Jason Gorski, who began at DeLille Cellars in 2011 and was officially named winemaker in 2014, continue to go from strength to strength. I got the distinct impression that Gorski has been happier with recent vintages than he was with 2015, a year in which extremely hot weather resulted in some raisining of the fruit. As we began with the winery’s whites, Gorski noted that the growing season of 2018 was similar to that of 2017, with both seasons witnessing some heat in September. But 2018 also had some heat in late August, and Gorski told me that the winery’s consistently stellar Chaleur Blanc “got a lot of help” from its Semillon component from Boushey Vineyard. (The 2017 bottling had naturally great acidity, he added.) And there was less heat in 2018 in October, which meant that there was no rush to pick fruit that was still hanging at that point.

Most of the serious reds I sampled this summer were from 2016, a growing season that Gorski said yielded larger berries and fruitier wines, but enough warmth that everything got ripe. Incidentally, 2016 was DeLille’s 25th vintage, and the winery’s Chaleur Estate Red Wine similarly was first made in 1992.
