Conterno-Fantino's 2011 Barolos all showed a little bit better than they did just after bottling, which is, of course, not a surprise when it comes to Nebbiolo. Fabio Fantino told me he shortened fermentations with the 2011s to about eight days in order to not extract too much given the inherent richness in the grapes. As is the custom here, the wines underwent malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels and were aged in a combination of barrique and cask prior to being bottled in May 2014. Readers will find a set of sumptuous Barolos that capture the essence of the vintage.

Fabio Fantino is pretty pragmatic about 2011. "Every year can't be a great vintage," Fantino says." There is no escaping the fact that it was 40 degrees (104F) temperatures for two months straight." I tasted the 2011 just after bottling.
