This property atop Diamond Mountain should be one to watch, especially as Fred and Mary Constant are able to vinify in their own winery, scheduled to be ready for the 2001 harvest (talented consulting winemaker Philippe Melka has made the wine in several facilities since the first vintage, 1995). The Constants are also building a spectacular new house at the top of the mountain, where they planted new acreage, including some syrah, in 1997 and 1998. At this altitude, the vines are above the morning fog. "We have warmer mornings and evenings here than on the valley floor," notes Constant, "without quite the same heat during the afternoons."
