Viña Concha y Toro is the largest viticultural entity in Chile and the third largest worldwide, listed on the New York Stock Exchange and controlled by the Larraín-Guilisasti family. They also have wine operations in Argentina (Trivento) and the USA (Fetzer Vineyards). In Chile, they have 10,250 hectares under vine across various terroirs. For their R&D, they have a cutting-edge Center of Research and Innovation in Talca, where they work on vine genetics and other areas to improve the quality of their stock in Chile. The oenological director, Marcelo Papa, oversees a range of technical teams at the different wineries.

The highest volume wines are those in the Marques de Casa Concha line, while more recent releases include Heritage Marques de Casa Concha and Concha y Toro Master Edition. In Limarí, they produce the Amelia line, which focuses on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since my first Chile report, I’ve been particularly interested in these two wines, as they offer a different approach to these grapes. Produced in a Burgundian style but grown in clayish and calcareous soils under the coastal sun, the Chardonnay achieves a sharp, nuanced and quite elegant character.

Concha y Toro is the largest company in the Chilean wine industry and the third largest globally. It’s hard to sum up such a major player in a few lines but we might focus on three aspects: first, the technical team is extremely well trained, led by the winemaker Marcelo Papa and supported by the Center for Research and Innovation the company has set up in Talca. Second, they produce wines from all over Chile at every price point. Third, they produce excellent terroir driven wines such as Amelia Chardonnay, Gravas del Bio Bio Sauvignon Blanc and the iconic Carmín de Peumo Carménère.
