This great chateau has caught the interest of early tasters with an atypically rich, mouthfilling wine from a low crop level of 32 hectoliters per hectare. "No concentrating devices here, just intellectual," explained managing director Pierre Lurton, by which I assume he did not mean that the impression of concentration is all in the mind of the taster. Cheval Blanc harvested thoroughly ripe but not overripe fruit on the early side: the merlot beginning on September 15 and the cabernet franc on September 22, well before the damaging rain of the 27th. Polyphenol levels in 1998 are very high, but the tannins, says Lurton, are thoroughly velvety. The '98 represents a 70% selection; it a 50/50 blend of cabernet franc and merlot, compared to a 60/40 ratio in the vines.
