Year after year Chateau Montelena makes some of the most attractive, classically built Napa Valley Cabernets readers will come across. Deceptively medium in body, the flagship Estate bottling has a way of developing beautifully in bottle. Readers who want to get an early look at 2014 might enjoy this short video I shot with Bo Barrett just after harvest.

In this hot spot north of the town of Calistoga, the estate cabernet was pretty much in by the time the rains arrived in 2011, said Bo Barrett, adding that a bit of the Napa Valley cab was still out and that "we didn't even pick the petite sirah."Barrett noted that "we're looking for more old-style cabernet in 2012 and 2013; we'd like to put a bit more guts back in the wine, but of course without any brett or old cooperage."Barrett is quite happy with 2013, adding that there was "nothing anomalous" during the growing season or harvest:"Yields were big, and it's the kind of vintage that people expect from Napa Valley every year."

Proprietor Bo Barrett and his team led by Cameron Parry and Matt Crafton exude passion. This year I tasted a wine that was new to me, the limited-production John Muir Hanna Chardonnay. Readers who want to learn more about Chateau Montelena may want to take a look at my recent video interview with Bo Barrett. Few producers in Napa Valley can match Barrett's perspective, particularly when it comes to framing current vintages within a historical context.
