This historic estate, which boasts 15 hectares of mostly old vines in the prime parcels of Gigondas, has always been at the forefront of quality for the appellation, but in 2015 Louis Barruol's are among the very best of the entire southern Rhône Valley, showing a combination of power and finesse that's truly stunning. His 2014s transcend the vintage as well, displaying uncommon depth for the year, not to mention intensity and capacity to age. The talkative and reflective Barruol, who represents the 14th generation of his family at Saint-Cosme, is a wealth of opinion and information on the history of the southern Rhône. He shares it freely with those who can arrange a (highly recommended) visit to the estate's ancient, hand-hewn cellars, which date back to Gallo-Roman times, when winemakers and cellar-workers (not to mention wine writers) were obviously of shorter and definitely narrower stature than most of those in the region today.
