Although I have tasted with Charles Van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat for many years, I had not tasted his own label. The project is in partnership with Johan Björkland, proprietor of the Bistro de l'Hôtel in Beaune, which is where I tasted the wines in the early evening. Not every wine hit the spot, although I found much promise in his two Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Crus: Les Cazetiers and Les Fontenys.

Charles Van Canneyt's range of micro-négociant wines seem to keep getting better and better. I suspect much of that comes with gaining more familiarity with these sites, none of which overlap with the wines he makes at Hudelot-Noëllat, his family's estate, and also focusing on appellations and growers that deliver the most consistent results. In general, these are fairly bold, racy Burgundies with a good deal of forward fruit and suppleness.

Charles Van Canneyt is best known for the wines he makes at Hudelot-Noëllat, his family's domaine. A few years ago, Van Canneyt set up a négociant business to expand his offerings while not duplicating any of the appellations in the Hudelot-Noëllat range. The wines are made in a fairly fruit-forward style, which is almost certainly also a reflection of the year. All of the reds are done with fully destemmed fruit. The various offerings in the range are made from wines purchased in barrel, except the Caillerets and Chevalier, which are bought as young musts. As is the case with all such operations, it will likely take a few years to ensure maximum consistency across all sources in the lineup. The only wine I did not taste was the Chevalier-Montrachet, of which there is only one half-barrel, which had been fined just prior to my tasting. Also tasted: 2015 Puligny-Montrachet Les Caillerets.
