Cavallotto Barolos need time. There is no getting around it. This year's new releases include the 2010 Bricco Boschis and the 2008 Riservas. I tasted the 2008 Riservas from barrel last fall, before the final blends were made, and they were superb. Not surprisingly, both Riservas have shut down considerably since they were bottled in June. I also had a chance to taste the 2007 Riservas, wines that are only now beginning to show the potential I sensed when I tasted the wines from cask. At press time, Cavallotto was planning to bottle both Riservas for the 2009 vintage, although according to Alfio Cavallotto production will be tiny and the wine will spend a bit less time in barrel than normal because of the precocious personality of the year.

The Cavallotto Barolos seem to just keep getting better and better with each passing vintage. This venerable, family-run estate in Castiglione Falletto is a great source for reasonably priced Barolos that will age several decades easily. Readers will not want to miss the two 2006 Riservas, both of which are off the charts. The wines are incredibly rich, powerful and showy, yet also clearly built for the long haul.

Cavallotto has been on a tear of late. This year I tasted a number of exceptional wines from this small, family-run property. In particular, readers should keep an eye out for the estate's 2005s. Late flowering that year reduced the crop by nearly 50% and resulted in a set of huge, powerful wines that are atypical for the vintage and that should age exquisitely over the coming years.
