Castello di Monsanto is one of the most striking estates in all of Tuscany. The large, sprawling property in a single piece includes more than 100 hectares of forest land alone. On a clear day 360-degree views will take the eye as far as the coast. Proprietor Laura Bianchi continues the traditions established by her father, Fabrizio, one of the early innovators in Chianti Classico in pushing for the appellation to eliminate white grapes and focus on Sangiovese. These classically built Chianti Classicos show the lithe style typical of this northern sector. All the Chianti Classicos are aged in cask, while French oak is reserved only for the Cabernet Sauvignon Nemo. For years, well, for decades now, I have admired the Chianti Classico and especially the Chianti Classico Riserva for their combination of quality, personality and value. One of Italy’s greatest wines, the flagship Il Poggio is capable of aging for many decades.
