María Luz Marín is an enologist who, in the 1990s, worked in bulk wine production. One day, however, she came across Lo Abarca, 2.5 miles from the sea in San Antonio, and bought 40 hectares to plant her vineyard. It was the year 2000, and she started with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and a few rows of other varieties, some on calcium-rich clay. There she developed her style of cool climate wines, Casa Marín and Cartagena. Today, winemaking is overseen by Felipe Marín, her son. The wines of Casa Marín represent the coastal profile of Chile, with an added touch of austerity that surprises in a market filled with fruit-forward wines.
