I was recently able to taste through five back vintages, direct from the winery, of the Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva Freienfeld from Kellerei Kurtatsch in Alto Adige. This is a wine that has stood out in my tastings and reports over the last two years for its classic cool-climate Cabernet style. What sparked this recent mini-vertical was my interest in just how well this wine would mature over time; and let’s just say that I was overly impressed. The Freienfeld Riserva was conceptualized in 1980, when the winery decided that the calcareous, gravelly and clay-ey soils of these parcels could be beneficial to experimenting with Bordeaux varieties. The two hectares of vines are planted between 220-350 meters on steep slopes with a south-eastern aspect. The first vintage of Freienfeld was 1988, and the wine is only made in selected vintages, typically totaling around 8,000 bottles per vintage, but at times significantly less. As an example, one of the next vintages that the winery plans to release is 2021, where there will only be 2,500 bottles. The Freienfeld is matured in French barriques, about 50-65% new. For fans of old-school Bordeaux or cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a wine that is truly worth seeking out.
