The wild wines of Massimiliano Calabretta can be easily recognized in a tasting, just like those of other similar producers, including Paolo Bea and Emidio Pepe. They are energetic yet intense, showcasing the varieties’ inherent traits and terroir above winemaking and polish while remaining clean and precise. Calabretta farms multiple sites across Etna’s northern slope without pesticides or herbicides. This non-interventionist approach continues in the cellar, employing spontaneous fermentations with wild yeasts and maturing their wines in neutral 50- to 70-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti. Their Vigne Vecchie is always a huge standout in tastings, released only when the winery believes it is ready, making 2015 the current release. This year also marks the release of the 2022 Nonna Concetta, which hails from century-old vines, many of which are pre-phylloxera at the higher elevations of the Feudo di Mezzo vineyard—around 680 meters. It’s a glorious rendition of this Contrada with a very bright future. It also reminds us that even in the warmest, drought-stricken years, older vines have a way of finding balance. Check out the non-vintage Rosso Cala Cala Cala for a fresh and energetic take on Calabretta’s winemaking.
