Bruno Rocca's comments on recent vintages of Barbaresco had my head spinning, as they did not track with what I heard elsewhere in this appellation. "Two thousand nine is like 2006, and more typical than 2008," he began. "Two thousand eight is classic but the tannins are softer and less ripe than those of 2007 and 2009; the wines will be enjoyable young. The '09s and 07s are more characteristic of nebbiolo in Piemonte. Two thousand eight is a wine for the whole world world of consumers, like 2000." Low yields are one of the keys to consistent quality at this estate, as Rocca keeps barbera yields to a maximum of 42 hectoliters per hectare, and Barbaresco below 38.
