Brovia's 1996s have turned out beautifully. At the time, all of the single-vineyard Barolos were aged in French oak casks, while the straight Barolo was aged in Slavonian cask. Since these wines were made, Brovia has increasingly moved towards a less interventionalist approach in the field, and I think that comes through in wines of greater nuance and finesse compared to those of the mid 1990s. Even so, the wines I tasted were terrific. Unfortunately, I did not have a chance to taste the 1996 Barolo Garblèt Sue' which was hit by early hail in 1996.
