As the challenges of difficult growing seasons fade with time, two things happen. First, in the memory of winemakers, rain events magically become less extreme: the actual torrential rainfall that plagued a harvest shrinks to moderate precipitation and eventually to a vague recollection of moisture. Freakishly cool or brutally hot harvest weather or damaging hail storms are virtually forgotten, as the body has a short memory for pain. At the same time, as the wines themselves mature and are transformed, they reveal themselves to be less extreme after all, until at some point it can be next to impossible to find the insanity of the vintage in the bottle. I’ve seen these patterns play out again and again in temperate wine-growing areas like Bordeaux, Burgundy and northern Italy—and even in normally hot, bone-dry growing regions. Two thousand eight was such a year for California’s North Coast.

This a very strong set of wines from the Harlan family’s BOND portfolio of single-vineyard Cabernets. The 2021s, which are still in barrel, are highly reflective of a very strong stylistic shift underway across all the Harlan properties towards an approach that favors much more freshness and verve than in the recent past. I was perhaps even more impressed with the 2020s. These are not easy wines. Like most 2020s, the BOND wines appear to have multiple personalities and can give very different impressions from tasting to tasting. Many of the 2020s were even better after having been opened for a day. That said, I would prefer to drink them on the earlier side because so much is unknown about this vintage.

Two thousand-twenty will likely go down as a seminal vintage at Harlan Estate, Bond and Promontory. More than just a story of a single vintage, 2020 has set a new direction for these properties. The team led by Managing Director Will Harlan and Director of Winemaking Cory Empting faced the same challenges as everyone else, but the results aren't the same. These are some of the very few 2020s I can call exceptional. The entire crop was harvested much earlier than usual, by necessity. Over time, the team was so happy with the wines that harvesting is now much earlier than it was in the past, but by choice. I have written for many years that the wines have been moving towards greater freshness. Two thousand-twenty is a big step in that direction. In addition to the 2020s, I also tasted the 2019s from bottle. Those wines are every bit as compelling as they were from barrel. I must admit that as I have gotten older and become more familiar with the Bond wines, I am especially fond of the Melbury. It is not a powerhouse, like some other wines in the range, but it might be the most finessed of the bunch.

The 2018 Bond Cabernets are phenomenal. Strong site expression, classic Napa Valley richness and vibrancy make these some of the most impressive and compelling wines of the vintage. If forced to choose, I would pick the Melbury and Pluribus as the most complete wines in the range, partly because I feel those wines don't always get their due. The 2019s, which I tasted from barrel, are a bit richer than the 2018s, but perhaps with a bit less delineation. That will be clearer once the wines are in bottle. For now, the 2018s are pretty magical. Winemaker Cory Empting and his team certainly got the best out of the year. That might seem obvious today in looking over these reviews, but the 2018s have really come together since I first tasted them in the spring of 2019, when the wines were shy, awkward adolescents.

I was blown away by the Bond wines in 2018. In a region that can sometimes be marked by a certain sense of sameness, the 2018s are remarkably pure and singular wines. In 2018, the signatures of each site are so well articulated that tasting through the range is really taking a tour through some of Napa Valley's most distinguished sites. A series of small and not so small refinements in farming and winemaking over the last few years is evident. The 2018s are bright, energetic and full of life.
The 2017s are, naturally the result of a far more challenging year. Production is down at many sites because of severe selection. Sadly, there is no Pluribus in 2017, as the entire crop was lost to smoke. The 2017s were fermented in a variety of vessels, stainless steel for Quella, wood uprights for St. Eden and a mix of stainless and barrel ferments for Melbury and St. Eden. Aging was 26-28 months, so a bit less than the norm at Harlan Estate.

For many years, I considered the St. Eden and Vecina to be the flagship wines, but in recent years the Melbury and Pluribus have made significant strides. Those are both true hillside sites (St. Eden is closer to elevated valley floor/bench and Vecina is a lower hillside), where farming is naturally much more challenging. The 2016s are shaping up beautifully, while the 2015s need time in bottle to be at their best. This is a gorgeous range of wines from Bill Harlan and his team led by Bob Levy and Cory Empting.

The 2014s and 2015s from BOND are terrific across the board. I found the 2014s even more expressive than they were six months prior, when my colleague Steve Tanzer and I tasted through a complete retrospective of all the BOND wines. The 2015s are naturally bigger and richer than the 2014s, yet they are all incredibly site specific. As a reminder, the BOND portfolio is composed of five single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from sites spread across the valley. With the exception of the St. Eden, all of the BOND sites are hillside parcels.

A remarkable comprehensive tasting at Bond Estates in March spotlighted the consistently high quality of the Bond wines and brought their distinctive terroir character into sharp relief.
Two thousand seventeen marks the unofficial 20th anniversary of Bill Harlan’s Bond project, which the Bond website describes as “A portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and 'grand cru' in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark.” Like Harlan Estate and its owner’s more recent Promontory endeavor, the Bond project grew slowly and organically. A recent comprehensive tasting at Bond in March showcased the portfolio’s consistently stunning quality and made their distinctive site qualities easy to appreciate.

This is a dazzling set of wines from BOND and the team headed by Cory Empting. The 2014s continue to develop positively. I remember tasting those wines from barrel, before they were racked and being impressed by the energy of the wines. Today, the 2014s have all of that energy, plus striking finesse. The malos were quite long in 2014, but today, the wines are very complete. The 2013s are just as impressive, or more, than they were from barrel. Two thousand thirteen is shaping up to be a fabulous vintage at BOND, where Bill Harlan offers five distinct essays on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as expressed in a collection of some of the best sites in the region. The 2012s are solid, but this is not a super-exciting vintage for Napa Valley, even at BOND. The biggest reason for that is that the personalities of the sites are not as marked as they usually are, something that is a characteristic of the vintage as a whole. As good as the wines are - and they are often fabulous - BOND is also the Harlan project that is at the greatest risk of getting lost in the shuffle. Harlan Estate is of course firmly entrenched as one of California's great wines. Promontory, another deeply site-specific wine, will soon make a case for inclusion among the valley's elite wines. But BOND, with its collection of five single-vineyard Cabernets, has a much less clearly defined identity. I am not sure why that is.

This is a superb set of wines from BOND. The 2011s are relatively delicate wines, while the 2012s are much more typical examples of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. I was quite surprised by the Pluribus, a wine that seems to have made a noticeable jump in quality over the last few vintages. Once a hard, somewhat compact Cabernet Sauvignon, Pluribus seems to have found a new level of finesse. The BOND portfolio is composed of five single-vineyard Cabernets meant to showcase some of Napa Valley's finest sites. In my view St. Eden, from the red soils of eastern Oakville, and Vecina, from Vine Hill Ranch are the most consistent performers, although as noted above, Pluribus has improved markedly.

I am not at all surprised to see how well the 2011s turned out at Bond, especially as I had a chance to revisit them all as part of a complete retrospective of all the Bond wines a few years ago. As was the case then, the 2011s are wonderfully fresh, energetic Cabernets that capture the best this very challenging growing season had to offer.

I still remember tasting the 2010s from BOND last year. The wines were drop-dead gorgeous then, and are just as impressive, if not more so, today. This is a great vintage for BOND, period. Over the last few years my sense is that the qualities of the five sites are becoming more and more expressive rather than being dominated by a 'Harlan' house style, which I sometimes felt was the case in the past. While the 2010s are going to require time, most of the 2011s should drink better earlier once the wines are bottled of course. BOND fans may want to take a look at my introductory comments in the Harlan Estate section for more context. Cory Empting is one of Napa Valley's brightest stars. Intellectually curious, with a huge passion for the world's great wines - not just those of Napa Valley - Empting seems perfectly poised to build on the legacy created at BOND by Bob Levy. Readers who can find these wines, the 2010s in particular, should not hesitate to pick them up, as they are breathtaking.

Two thousand seventeen marks the unofficial 20th anniversary of Bill Harlan’s Bond project, which the Bond website describes as “A portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and 'grand cru' in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark.” Like Harlan Estate and its owner’s more recent Promontory endeavor, the Bond project grew slowly and organically. A recent comprehensive tasting at Bond in March showcased the portfolio’s consistently stunning quality and made their distinctive site qualities easy to appreciate.

I still remember tasting the 2010s from BOND last year. The wines were drop-dead gorgeous then, and are just as impressive, if not more so, today. This is a great vintage for BOND, period. Over the last few years my sense is that the qualities of the five sites are becoming more and more expressive rather than being dominated by a 'Harlan' house style, which I sometimes felt was the case in the past. While the 2010s are going to require time, most of the 2011s should drink better earlier once the wines are bottled of course. BOND fans may want to take a look at my introductory comments in the Harlan Estate section for more context. Cory Empting is one of Napa Valley's brightest stars. Intellectually curious, with a huge passion for the world's great wines - not just those of Napa Valley - Empting seems perfectly poised to build on the legacy created at BOND by Bob Levy. Readers who can find these wines, the 2010s in particular, should not hesitate to pick them up, as they are breathtaking.

I have been excited about the BOND 2009s since I first tasted them 18 months ago. My enthusiasm for those wines is surpassed only by the 2010s. The 2009s are sexy, radiant and impeccably polished, while the 2010s are more inward, structured and brooding in style. It is impossible not to compare BOND to Bill Harlan's Harlan Estate. Although I am told the approach to farming and picking is identical in all the vineyards both estates look after, my sense is that the BOND wines are a little more vibrant than Harlan Estate, which tends to occupy a spot a little further out on the ripeness spectrum. It's hard to know what more there is to say about BOND. These are simply some of the most utterly magnificent wines I have ever tasted, and a true testament that terroir not only exists in Napa Valley, but that these are some of the most privileged sites for making wine anywhere in the world. In my opinion, in top vintages, the St. Eden, which emerges from the red soils of Oakville, and the Vecina, from Vine Hill Ranch, are two of the greatest wines in Napa Valley.

Bill Harlan and his team make the Bond wines through long-term lease arrangements they hold with vineyard owners in a handful of top sites in Napa Valley. With the exception of the St. Eden, these are all hillside vineyards. All of the wines in the Bond portfolio are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Overall, the 2008s are less consistent than the 2009s, which are shaping up to be brilliant. I also tasted a number of 2010s from barrel with Bill Harlan and winemakers Bob Levy and Corey Empting that were striking for their purity, depth and class.

Bill Harlan seems resigned to the fact that some California wine lovers inevitably are going to prefer certain Bond offerings to his Harlan Estate flagship wine."It's already being said on some wine web sites," he told me, suggesting that he's happy to live with multiple opinions on his wines, as long as they're positive.There is a fourth wine in the works under the Bond umbrella, from a vineyard on the lower slopes of SpringMountain (the first vintage is likely to be the 2003).Winemaker Bob Levy told me that 2001 was the least ripe of the 2001 to 2003 trio of vintages-or at least the 2001 wines show the widest range of ripeness."They need time," he asserts.The 2003 vintage was affected more by coulure and millerandage than by dehydration, with merlot affected the most, notes Levy.The winemaking team here, which also includes consultant Michel Rolland, likes 2002 for the quality of its tannins.Levy notes that the fruit was able to hang well past the heat spell of September and thus could be brought in in good conditions and with better balance.Long macerations are the rule here, as at Harlan Estate:45 days on the skins in 2002, and 50 or more in 2003.These are expensive but extraordinary wines, among the superstars of the NorthCoast.Production is up to about 7,000 cases in vintage 2003.

The 2001 Bond wines are typical of this era in Napa Valley, a time when farming and winemaking were pushed towards opulence. My feeling is that the wines from this period have aged inconsistently. It can hardly be a surprise that the approach taken today is much more restrained, but then again, that kind of learning can only take place over long periods of time.

A remarkable comprehensive tasting at Bond Estates in March spotlighted the consistently high quality of the Bond wines and brought their distinctive terroir character into sharp relief.
Two thousand seventeen marks the unofficial 20th anniversary of Bill Harlan’s Bond project, which the Bond website describes as “A portfolio of wines that are diverse in their geographic representation and 'grand cru' in quality, all under the umbrella of one philosophy, one team, one mark.” Like Harlan Estate and its owner’s more recent Promontory endeavor, the Bond project grew slowly and organically. A recent comprehensive tasting at Bond in March showcased the portfolio’s consistently stunning quality and made their distinctive site qualities easy to appreciate.

Bill Harlan's newest project has taken some criticism on the Internet for the $150 price tags placed on the inaugural 1999 releases this spring. But there are a few key differences between the Bond venture and the plethora of other new labels appearing in the retail market at triple-digit prices. For starters, the Bond team is the same one responsible for making Harlan Estate: winemaker Bob Levy and consulting enologist Michel Rolland. In contrast to other new labels that spring up out of nowhere, Harlan and his team have been working with the multiple hillside vineyards selected for the Bond project for the past decade, just as multiple vintages of wine from Harlan Estate were vinified before the first wine was commercialized. One other difference: the quality is in the bottle.
