I recently spent a crisp sunny morning at the estate in order to undertake a long-discussed vertical of Beau-Séjour Bécot from the first releases by Michel Bécot until the recently bottled 2015.

Since 1996, proprietor Gerard Becot has introduced squat stainless steel fermenters in which he does a long maceration (35 days in 2000) with very little remontage The 2000, a blend of 70% merlot, 24% cabernet franc and 6% cabernet sauvignon, appears to be the most promising wine made here in years, and Becot all-merlot super-cuvee La Gomerie is similarly strong. I was not able to taste the '99 versions of these wines, as they had recently been racked into tank in preparation for the bottling.

The yield in 1998 was just 34 hectoliters per hectare, says Gerard Becot, or a bit lower than that of La Gomerie, the limited cuvee of merlot introduced by Becot in 1995. Due in part to cool ambient temperatures, the cuvaison here lasted 32 days, including a bit of cold maceration prior to the onset of the alcoholic fermentation.
