If Brunello di Montalcino is viewed today as a prestigious wine much of the credit must surely go to this estate and its American owners, the Mariani family. The Marianis have worked tirelessly to promote their wines throughout the world and in so doing have created demand for many of the region's smaller producers. Banfi has also been at the forefront in the extensive research it has conducted throughout the zone, the most important of which has been the comprehensive work it has done in experimenting with the numerous clones of Sangiovese. Banfi makes a variety of wines from its holdings in Montalcino including Rosso and Brunello bottlings as well as several super-Tuscan blends. These richly colored, concentrated wines are made in an unmistakably international style.
