For a lesson on Montepulciano’s terroir, one needs to look no further than Avignonesi. When Virginie Saverys purchased the property in 2009, her first order of business was to place Sangiovese as her top priority, starting with the Vino Nobile. Saverys then started an intense study and delineation of the property’s vineyards, of which 102 hectares are solely Sangiovese represented across 70 different plots. Today, the results of this work can be witnessed through their current lineup of single-vineyard wines, which don’t fully see public release as the project is ongoing. With labels depicting each site and multiple vintages to taste when visiting the winery, this project really communicates terroir through Sangiovese purity. The flagship Vino Nobile and Grandi Annate remain the focus here. Yet, readers should seek out the Da-Di, a varietal Sangiovese produced using 10% whole clusters, spontaneous fermentation and aged for three months in clay amphora. It’s a zesty expression of Sangiovese that goes down way too easily yet is also limited, with about 1,400 cases produced each year.
