The wines of Mallorca are fairly rare birds outside of Spain and even within the island itself thanks to a combination of relatively small production and strong local demand. Ànima Negra, established in 1994, is an exception to that rule. It’s now comprised of just under 90 hectares of vines. Thanks to an energetic export plan it has largely been responsible for getting the word out to the world that top-class wines can be made on Mallorca. There’s a modern style to these Callet-centric wines in terms of polish but they are hardly international in character, showing an appealing blend of vibrant red and blue fruit and earthy qualities. They also age quite well, gaining floral and succulent herb nuances after a few years of bottle age.
