Bart and Daphne Araujo did not waste much time getting back in the game after their sale of Araujo Estate (now Eisele Vineyard). The Araujos were able to secure fruit from several top sources and rebuild their team in short order, while purchasing two small parcels of land in northern Oakville they call Rancho Pequeno. Bart Araujo told me after years of making a single vineyard Cabernet, he wanted to make a wine that blended fruit from different sources in more of an old-school style. The 2013 Cabernet is clearly a wine of transition, but the 2014 gives a clearer idea of where these wines are going stylistically. Françoise Peschon is the winemaker and Michel Rolland consults. If that weren't enough, the Araujos have also opened a new custom crush facility, Wheeler Farms, which is designed to service the needs of a small number of premium wineries.

Accendo is a bit of an outlier in Napa Valley in that the goal is to blend fruit from several sites to make a single wine. That philosophy has worked beautifully here in many vintages, including 2022. After a long and distinguished career, Daphne and Bart Araujo recently transferred ownership of Accendo to their children Jaime and Greg. The winemaking team led by Nigel Kinsman remains unchanged.

There was quite a bit of news at Accendo when I visited the winery this past fall. Ten years after founding Accendo, Bart and Daphne Araujo have stepped down from the winery and passed the baton to their children, Greg and Jaime. Bart and Daphne Araujo will continue to run their J.H. Wheeler label and Wheeler Farms, their state-of-the-art custom crush facility. The concept at Accendo is based on wines blended from many sites across the valley, in the tradition of many old-school Napa Valley Cabernets that were made before the current focus on vineyard designates. Winemaker Nigel Kinsman turned out a pair of exquisite 2021s.

Over the last few years, the Araujos have continued to upgrade the sites that go into their multi-vineyard Accendo Cabernet Sauvignon. I tasted the 2021 from various unblended components. I have to say, it is a bit sad some of those wines will ultimately disappear into a blended wine, but they do point to another outstanding vintage.

Bart and Daphne Araujo's Accendo wines keep getting better. The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is the finest vintage of that wine yet. In Cabernet land, the Araujos continue to refine their approach to the sites they work with. Their 2017 Cabernet is fabulous; the 2016 is just as terrific as it was last year, and the 2018 (which I tasted from separate components) is looking like it, too, will be stellar. Going back to the 2017 for a second, a big part of what makes that wine special is that it was made at the Araujo's state of the art Wheeler Farms custom crush facility, designed by winemaker Nigel Kinsman. Equipped with generator power and the most modern equipment, Wheeler Farms operated through the October 2017 fires with no interruptions, which is quite remarkable.

The Araujos are now sourcing fruit from some of the top sites in Napa Valley, including Vine Hill Ranch, Sleeping Lady and Oakville Ranch. Tasting the wines in separate components, as I was able to do with the 2017s, is a truly eye-opening experience. Readers should also be on the look out for wines from Accendo's sister label, Trois Noix, which is run by siblings Greg and Jaime Araujo, and is more or less the equivalent to the Altagracia range the Araujos previously made at Araujo Estate, in other words blends of the best fruit that does not go into the top bottlings.
