The 2011s at Dalla Valle are terrific. Consulting Winemaker Andy Erickson opted for shorter macerations, but the wines still saw a good 60-70% new oak for 32 months. Alcohols are in the 15% range, so these are certainly not shy wines.

Dalla Valle's Maya is one of Napa Valley’s most iconic wines. This complete vertical back to the inaugural 1988 is a poignant reminder of just how trailblazing Maya was back in the 1980s and 1990s. At the same time, though, Maya is timeless and enduring in its beauty.

Naoko Dalla Valle and her husband Gustav purchased their estate in 1982. The sunny, well-exposed property reminded Gustav Dalla Valle of his native Italy. Dalle Valle is located about mid-slope on the eastern side of Oakville in what is now recognized as one of the pockets of true excellence within Napa Valley. Pedregal, Weitz, Backus, Peter Michael’s Au Paradis and Oakville Terrace are some of the sites that surround Dalla Valle. Sadly, Gustav Dalla Valle passed away in 1995, but he left behind a rich legacy that even he probably could not have envisaged. Today, the winery is run by Naoko Dalla Valle with the assistance of Winemaker Andy Erickson.

Dalla Valle was one of the highlights of the three weeks I spent in Napa Valley this year. The wines are simply off the charts. Dalla Valle's 2010s are as fabulous as they have always been. Readers who want to check out the wines may want to start with the Collina dalla Valle, one of the best second wines in the valley. The 2011s are among the wines of that challenging harvest. Andy Erickson is among the winemakers who opted for bottling the 2011s a little later than normal, and credits Michel Rolland for having made that suggestion. As for the 2012s, they are shaping up magnificently. I also tasted two 2013s, both of which were off the charts. For more, readers may want to take a look at a short video I shot with Erickson at Dalla Valle earlier in the year.

A woman of extraordinary dignity and inner strength, Naoko dalla Valle is also among the most reserved and private owners in Napa Valley. The winery is stripped down to the core and model of total simplicity. There is no formal tasting room or fancy trappings. All that comes through is the utter magnificence of this site. When the wines are this profound, anything more would be superfluos.

Dalla Valle was one of the first generation of high-end, small-production wineries, the so-called ‘cults,' that shook up Napa Valley in the early and mid-1990s. More recently, though, the estate has seemed to enjoy a less glamorous profile than some of its contemporaries. Perhaps that is because proprietor Naoko Della Valle is reserved and soft-spoken, or it might have to do with a few vintages in the mid-2000s that weren't up to the highest standards this estate has set over time, or a little of both. No matter, Dalle Valle is back, and big time. This is a fabulous set of wines that captures the essence of some of Oakville's most pristine hillside sites. As luxurious as the wines are, the cellar itself looks more like something right out of Burgundy or Piemonte; small, functional and bare bones. Then again, with fruit like this, it really shouldn't take much to make great wines. During my last visit I also tasted a few wines from the early 1990s that were made by Heidi Barrett and Mia Klein. Frankly, those wines have aged unevenly. Over the last few years, Naoko Dalla Valle has formed a great partnership with winemaker Andy Erickson that I hope will last for a long time. These current and upcoming releases are simply stunning.
