Doug Shafer and long-time Winemaker Elias Fernandez made good use of their new optical sorter in 2011. The wines have turned out beautifully, yet they are naturally more restrained than the more opulent style Shafer fans have come to expect over the years.

Shafer is one of Napa Valley's best oiled machines. Year after year the wines deliver the goods in a rich, sumptuous style that defines the very essence of contemporary Napa Valley at its very best. The 2012s are terrific, but Shafer really shines in 2013 and 2014, two vintages in which the wines have a bit more energy and delineation than 2012, a year with mostly mid-weight wines built on forward fruit, but with less varietal character. Winemaker Elias Fernandez describes 2013 as a year with a generous crop. Unlike the vast majority of his colleagues, Fernandez opted for shorter macerations in 2014, a year with smaller berries and wines that extracted more quickly than in 2013, when the wines spent longer on the skins. Quite frankly, it's hard to go wrong with any of these wines, including the just-released 2011 Hillside Select, which is gorgeous.

Shafer remains a reference-point winery for Napa Valley. In a region where key people come and go every few years, Shafer has succeeded in creating an environment that fosters long-term loyalty. Winemaker Elias Fernandez arrived at Shafer straight out of Davis 30 years ago and worked his way up to the top, allowing Doug Shafer to concentrate on building the business. That partnership has paid big-time dividends for years and is one of the best examples of how important long-term organizational stability is in achieving a consistently high level of performance. As for the wines, they are terrific across the board. Readers who want to gain a little more perspective on the 2012 vintage might enjoy this short video I shot with John and Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez in May 2013.

Timing is everything. The 2011 harvest was the first at Shafer done with an optical sorter, a new tool that I am sure came in especially handy considering how much of the fruit had to be sorted and ultimately discarded. Although the flagship Hillside Select tends to get most of the attention at Shafer, this tasting once again confirmed that the other wines in the range are just as deserving of serious consideration. Shafer fans will want to take a look at the short video I shot at the winery earlier this year with John and Doug Shafer, and their long-time winemaker Elias Fernandez. This is another set of fabulous wines from one of Napa's blue chips.

Shafer doesn't miss a beat. After more than a month of intense tastings of Napa Valley wines in 2012, Shafer was a clear stand out for their consistency across the board. The Hillside Select Cabernet remains the flagship, but readers will also find plenty of equally compelling and delicious wines in this range. In particular, this year I was impressed with the Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five, which for my money is one of the best wines in Napa Valley in its price range. Although clearly made in a style meant to be enjoyed upon release, a recent bottle of the 2004 was superb, and showed the One Point Five can also age gracefully. My most recent visit ended with the 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon, an iconic wine that is still in great shape. John Shafer couldn't get enough workers to pick his vineyard when he wanted, so fruit spent longer on the vine than he originally intended, giving birth to the Cabernet Sauvignon that today is known as the Hillside Select.
