Cantina di Piglio is the shorter (and easier to remember, pronounce and use) name of this old cooperative, founded in 1960 and previously known as the Cantina Sociale Cesanese del Piglio. The winemaking is a collaboration between Daniele Proietti, a young consultant who works for a number of local estates, and Domenico Tagliente, the co-op’s historic winemaker. The wines have always been rather inexpensive but a little old-fashioned in their rustic tannins and tarry flavors, but I’m guessing that new vintages will showcase more of the floral elements that the two Cesanese varieties offer in spades. I look forward to better wines in years to come. The co-op also makes a solid white wine from the local Passerina variety.
