In 1999, Petra Unger took over her parents' Furtherhof (named for their village, beneath the iconic Göttweig monastery). In addition to her Grüner Veltliner-dominated vineyards around Furth, Unger farms Riesling in the steep, terraced Gaisberg and Hinterskirchl across the Danube in Stein, the latter site having been the first that her father purchased, in 1964, at first farming strictly as a hobby. Vinification is entirely in tank, which Unger sees as conducive to the clarity and brightness for which she strives. The single-vineyard wines generally ferment entirely spontaneously while the less expensive lots are yeasted. I hope to be able to report soon on a more complete range of Unger’s bottlings from the 2014 vintage.
