Claire Forrestier describes her young 2002s as 'friendly and open since the beginning.'The colors were weak at the end of the fermentations and the extraction of tannins was slow, so she did two more weeks of maceration, for a total of five weeks on the skins.Forrestier believes 2002 will be a vintage for average to long keeping. The 2001s will be similar, she adds, but perhaps less open early on. The wines were more tight at the beginning, with fruit that was powerful and intense.'She used less new oak (20% to 25% for the premier crus and 35% to 50% for the grand crus) in an attempt to add some complexity without overpowering the aromas and the fruit. But the change in 2001 also reflected her desire to reduce the percentage of new oak in her wines.I still found a number of the 2001s to be dominated by their wood element, but was much less aware of the oak in the young 2002s.(Martine's Wines, Novato CA
