According to Vincent Mongeard, the '96s here show lower pHs than the '95s despite the fact that grape sugars were higher. Mongeard describes his '96s as "un tres bon millesime " better than the '90s but a bit less good than '95. The '95s, he says, are developing great complexity, but they are demanding wines. 1996, in comparison, is more incisive, more direct, but also has class and very good aging potential. I thought the '96s, especially those from the higher appellations, were more impressive from barrel than the '95s were a year ago, but then I may have slightly underrated the '95s last year. And much will depend on how-and perhaps when-the '96s are bottled. Mongeard plan in November was to finish the mise by June, which is later than most of his neighbors will be bottling their '96s.
