Salustri Leonardo is, without a doubt, my happiest discovery after tasting through the wines of Montecucco, which started to make a lot of sense once I dug deeper into the history in the region. The estate sits on the slopes of Monte Amiata, less than 10 miles from Montalcino, and enjoys a combination of high elevations (some as high as 350 meters) and soils that comprise a combination of sandstone and limestone in varying proportions. The majority of the vines were planted in the 1960s, and they have been tended organically since the early 1990s. This attention to detail continues in the winery, hands-off yet hand-tended, as the wines undergo spontaneous fermentations and age in large-capacity oak (except Marleo, which only sees stainless steel). The fact is that Salustri Leonardo is the benchmark producer of the region, and it’s worth seeking out.
