It should come as no surprise that the Mugneret sisters managed to make sappy, energetic wines in 2012, as they are rarely guilty of harvesting too late. These very concentrated wines may well shut down in bottle, however, and Marie-Christine Mugneret predicted in November that the estate's 2013s will give pleasure earlier.

Two thousand twelve brought a "naturally" small crop due to an outbreak of caterpillars that ate the buds and to rain and cool temperatures during flowering, said Marie-Christine Mugneret. In other words, the wines were not overconcentrated by extreme weather events later in the season; they benefit from a good balance of maturity, acidity and tannins. The vintage required the least sorting of the grapes at harvest-time in ten years, she added. The malos were over by March and the wines were racked and sulfited in April. This is a gorgeous set of wines from sisters Marie-Andrée and Marie-Christine Mugneret. Sadly, yields are down a whopping 45% across the board. The harvest started on September 23. Malos were done by March and the wines were racked shortly thereafter. The Mugneret-Gibourg wines are defined by their total sense of transparency. That essential quality is very much on display in these gorgeous, effortless wines. The only problem with the 2012s is going to be finding them. Readers should note that the domaine is no longer making their Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru now that the vines are old enough to once again be bottled as Ruchottes-Chambertin.
