Christine and Marie-Andree Mugneret racked their '97s last April and again before the '98 harvest; they plan to bottle their wines in March and April but hastened to point out that the wines would spend their last few months in tank--to protect them against oxidation. Their top crus are quite strong for the vintage. The '96s here, bottled without fining or filtration, offer superb precision of flavor, with bracing acidity supported by ripe fruit. The distinct soil tones of the Mugnerets' holdings are beautifully expressed in '96. Christine and Marie-Andree Mugneret had no problems with rot in '95, and thus felt no need to use their table de trie But they relied on it extensively in '96, not to eliminate rotten grapes but to get rid of those that were less ripe. Yields here were a reasonable 35 hectoliters per hectare for the grand crus in '96. Grape sugars were generally a bit lower than those of the previous year, while pHs were about the same. The '95s, bottled last spring, have turned out very well. These wines will rely as much on their tannins as their acids for aging, while the '96s will age on their acidity.
