Simon notes that despite their low acidity, his '99s retain a fine, slatey sense of place. He showed me several of the best wines I have ever tasted from this address. I tasted only two Auslesen but, like many of his Saar colleagues, Simon boasted a half dozen such wines in '99, "all of them at levels of ripeness we normally never approach." He hastened to add, though, that there was a lot of wet botrytis this year that had to be picked out and discarded. (Rudi Wiest)
