Canatalupo is one of the reference-point estates in Ghemme and Alto Piemonte more broadly. Proprietor Alberto Arlunno crafts dramatic, large-scale wines endowed with tons of personality. The three 2017s I tasted were all bottled at the same time in 2023. I found the Anno Primo – theoretically the simplest of these three Gattinaras – to be the most complete of the wines, while the two single vineyard bottlings don’t seem to have the same level of purity or delineation as either the Anno Primo or previous editions.
