Ilbesheim in the southern Palatinate was not on most wine consumers’ radar screens until Boris Kranz started making ever-better wines from the Kalmit vineyard. Located close to the Alsace border, this estate was drenched by the showers that fell before and during the 2013 harvest. “It was one of the most difficult crushes in my career,” he told me. The youngest member of the VDP, he nonetheless was able to make a couple wines that sport the chalky distinction of his best sites.
