Alain Meunier waited until September 14 to pick, then accelerated his harvest when sugars skyrocketed. Grape sugars were eventually 12.8% to 13.8% and no chaptalization was done. "The skins were very healthy and thick, and no saignee was needed," he told me, adding that he tossed out just 2% or 3% of the grapes-"underripe grapes, not grapes grilled by the sun. It's a well-balanced vintage of pleasure." But 2008, he went on, is a Burgundy classic and should be a long ager for his wines: "10 to 15 years without a problem." I preferred the 2008s for their energy; the 2009s are richer but show more evidence of surmaturite. Like a few of his fellow winemakers, Meunier noted that the 2009s have started to close down in barrel since the summer, and now he's in less of a hurry to bottle them.
