Enologist Marco Dotta described 2005 as "a classic year for Martinenga, providing good clean fruit and good length-very fragrant wines with less sweetness than 2004. " As this estate releases its wines later than most of its colleagues in Barbaresco (they're releasing the 2004 basic Martinenga and the 2003 crus now), my tasting focused on the 2004s and 2003s, plus the current releases of their dolcetto and barbera, which I found more satisfying than on past visits. But then Marchesi di Gresy always produces wines that are more impressive, at least in the early going, for their lovely aromatic perfume than for their body. Alberto di Gresy never fails to point out that his estate's wines are less deeply colored than most, but that their colors are stable, and the Barbarescos have a track record for graceful evolution in bottle.
