Beringer releases its big reds at a leisurely pace: the vineyard-designated '98 cabernets had not yet been commercialized as of early March. So when I asked to see a full line-up of the 2000s and the 1999s (many of the latter still in barrel) at the beginning of March, my annual tasting marathon here provided Beringer's key players with a rare opportunity to view all their new wines at one sitting. I tasted with vice president Tor Kenward and winemaker Laurie Hook, who for years had served as Ed Sbragia's assistant. (Sbragia himself was recently promoted to Winemaster and Legend-in-Residence at Beringer.)

Someone apparently forgot to tell winemaker Ed Sbragia that 1998 was a mediocre year for North Coast cabernet and merlot. While these wines don't have the density and depth of flavor of the best vintages, they're hardly short on fruit. I tasted this year with Beringer Vice President Tor Kenward. (Beringer releases its vineyard-designated red wines late, so please refer to Issue 90 for notes on the finished '96s, which are in the market now or imminent.)
