Perroud’s family have been in Brouilly since 1789 and most of his holdings are on the slope of the extinct volcano, where yields are naturally low. The wines are made with native yeasts, whole clusters and carbonic maceration in concrete tanks before aging briefly in used oak casks of varying sizes, from barriques to foudres. The 2018s here show the depth and power that’s found in most wines of the vintage, while the 2019s present brighter and more energetic character, but with plenty of flavor depth. Perroud is still flying under the radar of many Beaujolais fans, maintaining exceptionally fair pricing. These elegant wines deserve more attention than they’ve been getting from Beaujolais purists, at least in the United States.
