Among the news at Schlumberger is that the family bought a new bottling machine that injects neutral gas into the bottles to remove oxygen, in an effort to further decrease any potential oxidation-related problems in their wines. The estate owns 130 hectares (of which 70 hectares are classified as Grand Cru and 70% of which are on hillsides) and have undertaken a huge replanting program because many of the old vines were poor producers. To put 130 hectares into perspective, Séverine Schlumberger told me that her father Eric used to say that if all their rows of vines were strung out into a single row, it would be 900 kilometers long, the distance from the town of Guebwiller in Alsace (where the winery is located) to Saint-Malo in Brittany. Schlumberger will not be making any Grand Cru Rieslings in the 2016 vintage; they found the wines too light and not up to their standards, and chose to declassify them into the Prince Abbées line of wines (which are always made with at least 30% Grand Cru wines).
