Gyles Webb, a compact, droll man whose wines have been winners at virtually all of South Africa's major competitions, began our tasting by showing me how his white wines fare with bottle age. The '93 chardonnay and the '94 Rhine Riesling were both full of life: the chardonnay truffley, biscuity and downright Burgundian; the riesling showing an enticing green-tinged color, and bracing aromas and flavors of lemon-lime, slate and petrol. The new vintages seem no less admirably built for graceful development in bottle. Webb's 2000 merlot reserve was the best example from that variety I tasted on my quick trip to South Africa.
